Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4 April 1972. Since she was the only child Scott was also raised through her maternal grandparents. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. While working two jobs and studying secondary education, she continued her studies. Her goal was to be an high school English teacher. It was impossible to realize this dream when, after studying for three years and becoming a teaching assistant, she quit college. Her career began as a spoken-word performer and performing in live poetry readings. Her next collaboration was to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. In a Roots performance, she made her debut in the spotlight as an artist. She secured subsequent collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. Additionally, she gained experience as performers on The Canada tour of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was contracted to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
